hts-six-phase-instructional-diagnostician

The New Classroom Instruction That Works English Description This skill is designed for K–12 teachers, instructional coaches, department leaders, school administrators, and educational leaders. It is rooted in the Classroom Instruction That Works research tradition established by Robert J. Marzano and his colleagues, and updated through the newer evidence synthesis presented in The New Classroom Instruction That Works. Marzano and his collaborators helped translate research on effective instruction into a shared and practical professional framework for educators. Building on that foundation, the newer edition reexamines a new generation of empirical studies and organizes effective instruction around six phases of learning and 14 research-supported teaching strategies. This skill does more than summarize Marzano-related instructional strategies. It turns the research into a structured diagnose–match–implement–verify workflow. It helps educators identify where student learning may be breaking down across six phases: Becoming interested Committing to learning Focusing on new learning Making sense of learning Practicing and reflecting Extending and applying learning Users can provide a classroom challenge, lesson plan, unit goal, student work sample, assessment result, or classroom observation note. Based on the learning goal, type of knowledge, student performance, and available evidence, the skill identifies the primary learning barrier and recommends two to four relevant strategies instead of presenting a generic list. The skill generates: A diagnosis of the primary and secondary learning barriers; Strategy recommendations informed by the Marzano instructional research tradition; Explanations of why and when each strategy is appropriate; Practical classroom actions and student tasks; Formative assessment ideas and success criteria; Observable evidence of student learning; “If–then” instructional adjustment rules; Low-inference classroom observation indicators; Recommendations for collaborative planning, peer coaching, and professional learning. It can be used for classroom diagnosis, lesson-plan review, unit design, formative assessment, collaborative planning, instructional coaching, classroom observation, teacher professional learning, and school improvement. The skill reflects a central principle of the Marzano research tradition: effective teaching is not a rigid sequence or a checklist. Strategies should be selected according to student learning needs and evaluated through evidence of student understanding, retention, and transfer. Its central purpose is to help educators: Identify where learning breaks down, select an appropriate evidence-informed response, and improve teaching through short cycles of implementation, observation, and reflection.
